Happy New Year!2 Comments

I have enjoyed the past few days resting, recuperating from the end-of-year busyness, and preparing for my trip.

I hope 2009 finds you well so far. More soon.

For the Last-Minute Folk2 Comments

Though, I previously posted a list of Christmas gift ideas, I wanted to post, in the last days leading up to Christmas, that there are several other ways to approach giving, which I have been frequently (1 2 3 4) hearing and reading about this year.

Check out this video from The Advent Conspiracy:
If this video gets taken down, it’s a clip from The Advent Conspiracy, which talks about rethinking giving over Christmas.

Just this morning, Cory donated a beehive in my honor:

From Uganda to El Salvador, bees from Heifer International help struggling families earn income through the sale of honey, beeswax and pollen.

Beehives require almost no space and, once established, are inexpensive to maintain.

As bees search for nectar, they pollinate plants. Placed strategically, beehives can as much as double some fruit and vegetable yields. In this way, a beehive can be a boost to a whole village.

Although most Heifer partners keep bees as a supplement to family income, beekeeping can be a family’s livelihood. Your gift can help Heifer provide a family with a package of bees, the box and hive, plus training in beekeeping.

In return, I plan to donate to The Garden of Hope.

Your Result: The Midland

“You have a Midland accent” is just another way of saying “you don’t have an accent.” You probably are from the Midland (Pennsylvania, southern Ohio, southern Indiana, southern Illinois, and Missouri) but then for all we know you could be from Florida or Charleston or one of those big southern cities like Atlanta or Dallas. You have a good voice for TV and radio.

Spotting10 Comments

A few weeks back, over Thanksgiving, I went camping with the Hohnstreiters. Jeremy, Amanda, Shawn, and I went out to Fairfield Lake State Park. There’s a lot I should post about this trip, but I found something that was too good to wait.

Mentioned repeatedly throughout the weekend was an activity the guys used to do growing up in Indiana — “spotting.” When they described to me that you go out at night looking for animals and then shine a spotlight on them, I couldn’t stop laughing. I don’t know what it was, but I had this picture in my head of a deer turning and looking at me as I “spotted” him and thought it was hilarious.

In Texas, spotting takes on a whole new meaning, because you’re legally allowed to hunt certain non-game animals. Beloved Texas quarterback Colt McCoy chose to spend the night of the Big 12 championship game doing exactly that, and here’s the interview to prove it!

PSA: International Calling1 Comment

If international calling is an important part of your life, I read about a service today called jaxtr that may be of interest.

How does it work?
1) Alice and Bob join jaxtr.
2) If Alice wishes to call Bob, she logs into jaxtr with the international number she wishes to dial; she receives a domestic number to call.
3) Bob receives notification from jaxtr that Alice is trying to reach him, along with a domestic number for him to call.
4) Once both parties are on the line, their call is connected via VOIP.

This service is free. I can see it really taking off as well as potentially becoming a wake-up call (PUN!) to existing telephony providers.
